After being diagnosed with major depressive disorder as a teenager I began taking digital self-portraits as an attempt to channel my emotions. Utilizing expressive and sometimes graphic photographs of my face alongside soft-focused, dreamlike images of my body - my work shows the ebb of flow of vulnerability and empowerment I experience in front of my camera. The images shown here were taken in the last two years, a time in which I’ve struggled with my mental health more than ever - and have found a further sense of wordless freedom in sharing my emotional state visually. I hope in sharing my work to further destigmatize conversations about living with mental illness and to encourage others with similar struggles to utilize art as a tool for healing.
