I use photography to share my experience of being Japanese American while growing up in the Midwest. This project highlights the complexities of being multiracial in America. I explore my Japanese identity through the use of self-portraiture, documentary, and the vernacular photographs. I am heavily influenced by my grandmother— whom I am named after— and her immigration story, as well as traditions within Japanese culture. I have lived my entire life between two cultures —always being told to pick a side—but now, I proudly live in the in between.
